Piercebridge

In the time of the Roman Empire Britain was invaded and became a part of the empire. The Romans advanced North, building defences, roads and towns. One such road called ‘Dere Street’ passed through a small settlement in what is now County Durham. At this point it had to cross the River Tees, a bridge was built, and a fort after that to defend the bridge. The settlement grew and became ‘Piercebridge’.
